About Turman Forest Products

Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Turman Forest Products is a premier hardwood sawmill specializing in the manufacturing of high-quality green Appalachian hardwood lumber. Since our beginnings, we have been dedicated to sustainable forestry practices and building lasting partnerships with landowners, loggers, and businesses throughout Virginia and beyond.

A Legacy of Sustainable Appalachian Hardwood Products

Our 44 Year History & Commitment

Our story begins in 1981 when the Allen family founded our sawmill as Hilltop Lumber. In 2018, we were proudly acquired by The Turman Group and became Turman Forest Products, combining decades of local heritage with the strength of a leading forest products organization.

Today, with a team of approximately 30 dedicated employees, we continue our commitment to quality and community. We purchase over 6 million board feet of logs and standing timber annually, supporting local landowners and the regional economy.

From Forest to Final Product: The Power of Vertical Integration

Turman Forest Products is a key component of The Turman Group, an organization of vertically integrated companies. This means we manage nearly every step of the wood product lifecycle—from sustainably harvesting timber to manufacturing and distributing the final product. This “forest to final product” philosophy gives us unparalleled control over quality, efficiency, and sustainability.

The Turman Group Advantage

  • Unmatched Quality Control: Our oversight begins in the forest. By managing timber procurement and operating our own sawmills, we ensure that only the highest quality Appalachian hardwood enters our supply chain. This quality is maintained at every subsequent step, from the kiln to the flooring mill.
  • Supply Chain Reliability: Because we aren’t solely dependent on third-party mills or log suppliers, we can maintain a consistent, streamlined, and reliable flow of materials. This minimizes delays and ensures we can meet our commitments to you.
  • Total Sustainability: Vertical integration allows us to practice full-circle utilization. Every part of the log has a purpose within The Turman Group. A log that arrives at our facility may become lumber, with the bark being processed into mulch, the chips converted into fuel pellets, and the sawdust used for boiler fuel. This commitment to using the entire resource minimizes waste and maximizes value.

Turman Forest Products — A Key Component

As a primary sawmill for The Turman Group, Turman Forest Products  plays a foundational role in this entire process. We transform raw logs from regional landowners and managed forests into the high-quality green lumber that supplies the diverse value-add operations of The Turman Group—from hardwood flooring to industrial pallets.

Our Commitment to Sustainable Forestry

By choosing Turman Forest Products, you are partnering with a company that values the forest as much as the high-quality products it provides.

Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable

We are proud to be an Appalachian Hardwood Verified Sustainable sawmill. This isn’t just a title; it’s a verification backed by U.S. Forest Service data. This data confirms that the timber growth in the Appalachian Hardwood Region far outpaces what is harvested.

  • Growth Outpaces Harvest: For every tree harvested in the Appalachian region, 2.4 trees are growing in its place. This ensures the long-term health and expansion of our forests.
  • Third-Party Assurance: This program provides our customers with trusted, third-party assurance that our wood products are sourced from a healthy, regenerating, and sustainably managed forest.
  • Protecting a Vital Resource: Our participation in this program demonstrates a commitment to responsible practices that protect biodiversity, water quality, and the overall forest ecosystem.

Our Sustainable Practices in Action

Our commitment goes beyond certifications. It’s reflected in our daily operations and our partnership with landowners.

  • Full Forest Utilization: As a zero-waste facility, we ensure that every part of the log is used efficiently. High-quality lumber is our primary product, while bark is processed into mulch, sawdust is used for fuel, and wood chips are supplied for paper production.
  • Landowner Partnerships: We work closely with landowners to develop timber management plans that meet their financial goals while promoting the long-term health of their woodland. This includes selective harvesting techniques that allow younger, healthy trees to thrive.
  • Continuous Reinvestment: By creating a strong market for sustainable wood products, we encourage landowners to keep their lands forested rather than converting them for other uses, ensuring our forests remain a vital and renewable natural resource.
